Step-by-Step Guide

1

Identify all super funds

Check myGov for linked super funds. The deceased may have multiple super accounts. Use the ATO's Super Fund Lookup tool or check past employer records.

2

Contact each super fund trustee

Notify each superannuation fund of the death. Provide the death certificate and proof of your authority. Ask whether a binding or non-binding death benefit nomination is on file.

3

Determine beneficiary nomination type

A binding nomination directs the trustee to pay specific beneficiaries. A non-binding nomination is only a guide — the trustee decides. If no nomination exists, the trustee has full discretion.

4

Claim death benefit

Eligible dependants (spouse, children, financial dependants) can receive the benefit as a lump sum or income stream. Tax treatment varies based on the recipient's relationship and age.

5

Check for life insurance within super

Many super funds include default life insurance (death cover) and TPD insurance. Claim these separately from the super balance — they can be substantial.
