Identify the next payroll date
Log into the payroll system and find the next payroll processing date. If it is within days, it MUST be processed. This is the single most time-sensitive task.

Add an admin immediately
Grant a trusted person full admin access to the payroll system. They need to be able to process payroll, manage employee information, and handle tax filings.

Verify the funding bank account
Ensure the bank account that funds payroll has sufficient funds and will remain accessible. If the bank account is at risk, update the funding source.

Review employee benefits
Check for health insurance, 401(k), HSA/FSA, and other benefits administered through the payroll system. Employees and families depend on these. Contact each benefit provider.

Coordinate with CPA on tax obligations
The payroll system files payroll taxes (941, W-2, state withholdings). The CPA needs to understand what is automated to prevent gaps or duplicate filings.
