Step-by-Step Guide

1

Check for Emergency Access

LastPass allows users to designate emergency contacts who can request access after a waiting period. If this was set up, the trusted contact can initiate access.

2

Find the master password

Search physical locations (safes, filing cabinets, attorney's office) for the master password. This is the only way to decrypt the vault.

3

Try account recovery options

If the deceased's phone and email are accessible, try the account recovery flow. LastPass offers SMS recovery and one-time recovery passwords on previously trusted devices.

4

Contact LastPass support with death certificate

Submit a death certificate and proof of legal authority to LastPass support. They may be able to assist with account-level changes but cannot decrypt the vault.
