Step-by-Step Guide

Export critical data

Download all data from Azure Storage accounts, SQL databases, and Cosmos DB instances before making any changes. Use Azure Portal → Export or the Azure CLI.

Stop or deallocate running resources

Shut down all VMs, App Services, AKS clusters, and Functions to stop compute charges. Azure Portal → All Resources → Stop/Deallocate.

Transfer subscription ownership

Azure supports subscription ownership transfer. Go to Subscriptions → Transfer billing ownership. The new owner gets all resources.

Cancel subscriptions or contact support

If no transfer is needed, cancel the subscription. Contact Azure support with death certificate for estate account closure.

Document Now Checklist

  • Azure account email and tenant ID
  • List all subscriptions and resource groups
  • Monthly Azure bill amount
  • List running VMs, databases, and storage accounts
  • Note any custom domains or DNS zones
