Step-by-Step Guide
Check for Emergency Access contacts
Bitwarden supports Emergency Access where a trusted contact can request vault access after a configurable waiting period. Check if this was set up.
Find the master password
Check physical safes, sealed envelopes, or attorney's files for the master password. Without it, the vault cannot be decrypted.
Locate the recovery code
Bitwarden generates a recovery code when 2FA is enabled. This 32-character code may be printed or stored physically. It bypasses 2FA but still requires the master password.
Contact Bitwarden support
Contact Bitwarden support with a death certificate. Due to zero-knowledge encryption, they cannot recover vault contents but may assist with account access.
Document Now Checklist

What is 2FA?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is the single biggest barrier families face when accessing accounts after death. If 2FA is enabled on an account and nobody has the authenticator device or backup codes, the account may be permanently inaccessible.
Google Authenticator
Open Google Authenticator → tap your profile icon → turn on sync. This backs up your 2FA codes to your Google account so they survive phone loss.
Authy
Settings → Devices → Allow multi-device. This lets you add Authy to multiple phones or tablets. If multi-device is off and the phone is lost, recovery is extremely difficult.
